Itinerary

Upon arrival from your flight into New Delhi, a guide will pick you up from the airport and take you to your hotel for a night’s sleep. We begin the next day touring our first temple and take in the sights of New Delhi. That night we have our first dinner together at the Red Fort.

The next morning we wake up early with excitement to visit the famous Taj Mahal in Agra. This ivory-white marble mausoleum was commissioned by an emperor to house the tomb of his favourite wife.

We drive onto the beautiful city of Jaipur and spend 2 days sightseeing, including visiting the epic City Palace. While in Jaipur, we will take in a traditional meal that will enliven our senses – a Rajasthani Dinner.

We then fly on to the beautiful, spiritual Rishikesh by the Himalayas. This is where most of the retreat will take place as it’s the centre for spiritual seekers. Our journey here will begin with an opening ceremony with a local priest. Every morning, we will have meditations at the river Ganga (Ganges), followed by yoga practices and mini-Ayurveda workshops. Afternoons will involve touring temples and ashrams, sightseeing, and time for shopping, rest or to have an Ayurvedic massage at the hotel’s spa (extra cost). We will participate in a Ganga Arti – a spiritual ceremony by the Ganges. One afternoon we will learn how to cook Indian food.

On one of the days, we will watch the sunrise and meditate at the Kunjapuri Devi Temple (the most revered Shakti Peeths of Goddess Shakti in Garhwal Himalayas). It’s located at about 1,600 meters in height (5,400 feet). You can see the most amazing views of the snow-clad white Himalayas and the Ganges.

On the final night together, we will end with a closing dinner, to then depart the next morning back to New Delhi (after our last breakfast as a group), where we’ll catch our connecting flight (unless you choose to stay on).

Your Teachers

Shanine Dennill

Shanine was introduced to yoga in 1999 while living in South Africa (born and raised). It wasn’t until she came to Canada in 2001 that she fell deeply in love with it. Yoga became a sanctuary for her during times of grief. It was a place where her mind stopped as she focused on the yoga postures and her breath. In this space of a still mind, a whole world opened up for her.

Being a yoga student first, she took her first yoga teacher training over 12 years ago and has gone on to do three more teacher trainings. She has owned Chrysalis Yoga for over nine years now. She loves training yoga teachers-to-be – there’s nothing more powerful than witnessing a group of students bonding over six months and fully transforming their lives by delving deeply into the principles of yoga.

Her new studies in Tantra Yoga and Ayurveda have awakened her to the potential of living in harmony with life – awakening to inner energy. Her yoga practices are heavily influenced by breath, meditation, and consistent, intelligent sequencing of poses, while grounded in alignment to keep everyone safe. She brings to her teaching compassion and sensitivity to challenge students to access an inner wisdom available to us all.

Manish Trivedi

Manish is an Ayurvedic doctor who represents one of the most ancient systems of medicine, a sister alliance of yoga. He acts as an orator, teacher, clinician, and researcher. He is dedicated to sharing the ancient wisdom from sages of the mind, body, and soul with our community. Manish has a special interest in treating chronic illness. He incorporates Ayurvedic herbs, diet suggestions, yoga, breathing exercises (pranayama), and Ayurvedic techniques to restore balance and treat the root cause of diseases.

Manish has practiced Ayurveda for 25 years, and his journey of studying Ayurveda continues. He completed a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (B.A.M.S) from the University of Poona. After graduation, he did a 3-year residency in a multi-focused hospital and started his private clinic in India.

Since coming to Canada in 2012, Manish has been practicing and spending his free time teaching Ayurvedic principles to the community and yoga graduates. He teaches various courses of Ayurveda to enthusiastic learners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this retreat suitable for beginners to yoga? What style of yoga will be offered?

This retreat is suitable for anyone, regardless of age, physical ability or prior experience in yoga, breathwork, Ayurveda, or meditation. This is a journey for you to move deeper within and experience a deeper shift. The yoga will only be offered once we are in Rishikesh and will be for one hour in the morning. The yoga practices are Hatha based (with Tantra influence) to find greater harmony within and a deeper connection to the energy in all. They will tie in with our energy levels while traveling and with the Ayurveda mini-workshops.

What is Ayurveda, and what will we be doing in these mini-workshops?

Ayurveda is the sister science of yoga and is one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems (developed more than 3,000 years ago in India). It’s based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. Its main goal is to promote good health to prevent disease.

In these workshops, you will learn practices to implement in your daily life – develop a morning spiritual routine for your physical and mental health; develop a nightly routine to help you sleep; breathing practices; the right foods to eat for your particular constitution; and more.

Do I need a Visa traveling to India?

Yes. It can be a long process so please start now. We will send you details in your Information Booklet. For now, you can go HERE to apply

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes. We request all participants to have travel insurance. We recommend Travelex and World Nomads. Please email shanine@chrysaliyoga.ca a copy of your insurance.

What vaccinations do I need?

According to the CDC, you need to start your immunizations at least four to six weeks before you plan to leave. That way, the vaccines will have time to become effective. Although some vaccinations are not mandatory, we ask that you speak to your health care provider.

Some recommended vaccinations are:

  • Hepatitis A – transmitted through food and water
  • Typhoid fever – caused by bacteria, by eating or drinking contaminated food or water

Others include:

  • Hepatitis B – exposed through sexual activity, recreational drug use, being in an accident, receiving medical care
  • Japanese encephalitis – transmitted by the bite of a mosquito
  • Rabies
How do I fly to India? What airport do I fly into?

You will need to arrange your flight into and out of New Delhi, India. The airport is called Delhi International Airport (DEL). We recommend booking early when the flights are cheaper. We will send you details in your Information Booklet on what day and time to be in by. A driver will take you to your hotel when you arrive (please send us your flight details and arrival time). Details will be given on what time to arrange for flights back home in your Information Booklet.

It’s just me traveling, what do I need to know?

We will travel as a group – to travel safely and make friends. You can book single room accommodations if you wish to have a room for yourself (price is higher – so please email shanine@chrysalisyoga.ca for the prices). Or you can book double rate accommodation, where you will be paired with another yogi traveling by themselves. Prices are listed for double occupancy on the website and when you check-out online.

I’m traveling with my partner, what do I need to know?

This is amazing to experience India with someone you know. Double occupancy rates apply – just let us know (shanine@chrysalisyoga.ca) you are booking with your partner so we can make proper hotel arrangements.

How many people will be on the retreat with me?

We will have 10+ travelers and will be limiting the size.

What are the accommodations like?

Accommodations are chosen based location and 4 star ratings. Hotels include wifi, western toilets, stunning views, and air conditioning. You will have views of the Taj Mahal and in Rishikesh we will be staying in a brand new hotel.

How will we be travelling in India?

There will be two domestic flights within the trip, and most of the land trip is with a Tempo Traveler or Mini Bus. One day will be by rickshaw. We will have a guide or guides with us for the duration of the trip. We’ve picked only the top guides who have worked with renowned international yoga leaders.

What do I bring? Do I bring my mat and other props?

We will provide you with a suggested packing list in your Information Booklet. Please bring your mat and any other props you may need (please be mindful of the domestic flights and keep your luggage within reason to avoid extra costs).

What will the weather be like?

November is the best time to go to India. This is considered to be the beginning of their winter, but temperatures are still great. It’s not during the summertime (not too hot), and it’s after the monsoon season. Temperatures can be as high as 30°C (85°F) during the day and as low as 14°C (30°F) at night. We recommend bringing layers (especially when we go to Rishikesh).

What is the food like?

India has flavourful food with many spices. We will be eating Breakfast and Dinner at the hotels. Lunches will be while traveling. We will be guided where to eat and what not to eat by our guides and Manish. We highly recommend being careful what you eat when traveling to avoid getting sick (especially when sightseeing). Rishikesh is a vegetarian city by law and is an alcohol-free city.

How much money should I bring? What is the currency and exchange rate?

We suggest budgeting around $20-25 a day (Canadian) for lunches and gratuities (restaurant, guides, drivers, hotel staff). Breakfast and dinner are included in the cost of your trip. Have extra money for Ayurvedic spa treatments and shopping.

When traveling, we recommend getting your money exchanged before leaving Canada.

Do I have to participate in all the activities?

All activities are voluntary. We do, however, ask that you stay with the group to maintain safety while traveling (no sightseeing on your own).
